Farming has a lot to do with planning for the future while making the most of today. It was 3 years ago that our sheep were first sheared, here on Blooming Joy Farm. It was 8 months ago that I skirted 55 pounds of accumulated wool to prepare it for the upcoming processing of spinning wool to yarn. To turn a raw material into a beautiful product that you can be really proud of is something that I have just experienced. A few weeks ago I got the call from the Wool Mill in Belgrade, MT that my yarn was ready to pick up. To say I was excited to finally arrive at this place in our farm dreams and goal is an understatement.
Through researching the nutritional needs of the Icelandic sheep and selecting breeding groups of sheep based on fleece color and luster, this yarn is beautifully soft and reflects the depth of natural color found in the wool. We are offering a Flathead River Rock Grey that has an undertone of light tan. Glacier White is a creamy off white. Montana Granite Grey is a charcoal grey with flecks of light grey to give nice depth.
Icelandic wool is a beautiful, double layered coat, with a fine, soft undercoat called thel and a longer, coarser outer coat called tog. The tog fiber is strong, water and wear resistant that makes for perfect outerwear garments; hats, sweaters, gloves and scarves and socks. Thel is the soft downy undercoat. It provides the insulation for the sheep. On average, an adult sheep will produce 4-7 pounds of wool per year. Icelandic’s produce a wide variety of beautiful colorful wool in shades of cream, grey, varying colors of browns from deep chocolate to latte tan and charcoal to black.
Blooming Joy Icelandic Wool is for sale! This wool is Montana raised and processed.
